The Balearic Islands are actively promoting the transition to electric propulsion for boats and vessels, and we are here to assist both individuals and businesses in every step of the process. We facilitate your application for subsidies and guide you through the transformation of your boat into a 100% electric or hybrid vessel.
On December 10, the Balearic Islands issued a public call for subsidies aimed at decarbonizing the nautical sector. This initiative is part of the broader Investment Plan for the Energy Transition of the Balearic Islands, funded by the European Union’s Plan of Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience (NextGenerationEU).
With a total allocation of €15 million, applications for subsidies will be open starting from December 15 and will remain so until October 31. Funds will be allocated strictly on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to exhaustion.
The Balearic Islands offer four distinct programs:
Program 1: Procurement of New Zero-Emission Vessels
Funding Support:
- 70% for individuals without business activity (up to €7,000)
- 50% for individuals and legal entities with business activity (up to €5,000)
Eligibility Criteria:
- New zero-emission vessels listed in the sixth or seventh category
- Solar panels must be installed on board
Requirements:
- Deregistration of a similar boat with a combustion engine, owned for at least one year
PROGRAM 2: Boat Conversion – Transitioning Sixth and Seventh Category Vessels to Zero Emissions
Funding Support:
For individuals without business activity:
- 70% for vessel conversion (up to €15,000)
- 80% for technical documentation (up to €5,000)
- 80% for the installation of solar panels (up to €3,000)
For individuals and legal entities with business activity:
- 50% for vessel conversion (up to €12,000)
- 80% for technical documentation (up to €5,000)
- 80% for the installation of solar panels (up to €3,000)
Eligible Elements:
- Conversion of boats to zero emissions (up to 12 meters in length)
- Onboard power generation using solar or wind panels.
- Scrapping costs of the old boat
- Project management and creation expenses
Requirements:
- The boat must be registered under the Spanish flag in the sixth or seventh category.
- Submission of a project proposal and a technical report (including calculations of CO2 reduction and waste management)
PROGRAM 3: Infrastructure for Businesses Supporting Infrastructure for Businesses Transitioning to Zero Emissions
Funding Support:
- 50% of the investment, up to a maximum of €10,000
Eligibility Criteria:
- Infrastructure and equipment necessary for businesses undergoing the transition
Requirements:
Possession of the required permissions and expertise to conduct the transformations
PROGRAM 4: Passenger, Goods, and Fishing Transportation Conversion of Tourist, Recreational Passenger, and Freight Transportation Vessels
Funding Support:
- For small businesses: 65% of the investment
- For medium-sized companies: 55% of the investment
- Maximum support amount of €500,000
Eligibility Criteria:
- Conversion of vessels (up to 12 meters in length) to zero emissions
- Conversion of vessels (more than 12 meters in length) to zero emissions while in port waters
- Onboard power generation using solar or wind panels.
Requirements:
- Vessels must fly the Spanish flag and operate in the Balearic Islands
- Submission of a strategic plan
