What We Learned at the Advanced Maritime Technology Exhibition 2026

Earlier this week, part of the Phoenix One team travelled to Amsterdam for the Advanced Maritime Technology Exhibition 2026, one of the largest gatherings in Europe dedicated to maritime technology, electrification and propulsion innovation. We went as practitioners, not exhibitors. Our goal was simple: talk to the people building the components we integrate, see where the technology actually stands today, and bring back something useful for the projects ahead.

Talking to the people who build the systems

The single most useful thing we did in Amsterdam was not walking the show floor. It was sitting down directly with system providers, the companies designing the battery modules motor controllers and propulsion hardware we work with on every conversion.

Their technical depth is something a spec sheet never fully captures. But more importantly, we found real value in giving them feedback early on component design, on interfaces, on how their systems actually behave once installed on a working vessel. Early-cycle input like this is what makes integration easier and more reliable later. A connector decision made in a design review saves hours on a boat eighteen months down the line. Input into product development before serial production starts, means we can benefit from both customizability and economies of scale further down the line.

Battery safety, and where drive technology actually stands

A significant part of our time was spent on battery safety and protection, thermal management, cell-level monitoring, fault isolation, and the protocols that keep a lithium system safe through years of marine use. This is not a solved problem industry-wide, and seeing how different manufacturers approach it side by side was genuinely useful.

We also got a clearer picture of where electric and hybrid drive technology stands today, not the marketing version, the engineering version. Power density, efficiency curves, real-world reliability data. The kind of detail that shapes which architecture makes sense for a given vessel, the question we walk through in our recent article on hybrid vs. electric propulsion.

An exhibition is also a relationship, not just a showcase

Events like AMTE are often framed as a place to see the state of the art. That is true, but it undersells what actually happens there. Just as valuable is the chance to strengthen relationships with providers we already work with, talking openly about what has worked on past projects, what has not, and what needs to change going forward.

It is also where new bridges get built. Conversations with providers we had not worked with before, comparing notes with other integrators facing the same engineering problems, finding the people who will matter on a project two years from now. None of that happens by reading a catalogue.

What this means going forward

The technology is moving fast, batteries are safer, drive systems are more efficient, and the supply chain is maturing. But technology alone does not make a good conversion. The relationships with the people building these systems, the willingness to feed back into their design process, and the discipline to specify safety properly are what turn good components into a reliable vessel.

That is the standard we are holding ourselves to on every project from here. We came back from Amsterdam with new contacts, sharper technical judgement, and a few conversations that will shape how we spec battery systems on upcoming conversions.
