The right answer depends on the right question
The most common mistake in marine electrification is starting with the technology. A motor is chosen, a battery bank is sized, and then someone tries to make it fit the vessel. It produces systems that look good on paper and underperform on the water. At Phoenix One, we do it the other way around. Before we recommend any architecture (parallel hybrid, diesel-electric, full electric) we need to understand the vessel it will live on and the mission it needs to serve.
That understanding starts with three questions.
1- How is the vessel actually used?
Route length, daily operating hours, season length, load profile, cruising area. The answers to these questions determine everything. A vessel running 2-hour harbour tours in a marina with shore power available has a completely different energy profile than one doing 8-hour coastal routes between ports with no charging infrastructure. Both can be electrified. Both require a different architecture to do it properly. There is no universal solution in marine electrification. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling a product, not solving a problem.
2- What does the owner want to achieve?
Every owner comes to this conversation with a different priority. Some want to eliminate fuel costs. Others are focused on the passenger experience — the silence, the absence of vibration, the quality of time on board. Some are responding to new port regulations. Others are thinking about the long-term value of their asset. All of these are valid goals. But they lead to different specifications. A system optimised for fuel savings looks different from one optimised for silent passenger experience. Understanding which goal matters most shapes every decision that follows. 3- What does success look like for this vessel in five years?
A propulsion conversion is not a one-day decision. It is a ten-year investment. That means thinking beyond installation day — about how regulations will evolve, how the vessel’s use might change, how the technology will develop and what it means to have a system that can grow with it.The Balearic Islands and the broader Mediterranean are introducing increasingly strict emissions and noise requirements. Port infrastructure is being upgraded. The direction is clear. A conversion done well today should be designed to be ahead of that curve, not just compliant with it.
Vessel first. Architecture second. Components last.
Once those three questions are answered clearly, the choice between hybrid and full electric propulsion becomes far more straightforward.
